This is an application guide for the specification PROFIBUS DP Profile for HART? Developer of devices appreciate to get more practical information and examples then the specification provides.
The application guide is given to a variety of developers, systems integrators and product managers:
Product managers planning development of compliant products can use this document to assess the range of solutions available and understand the trade-offs that can be made.
The developer of a compliant HART Master Device (HMD), in other words, an I/O System, can use this document to properly interpret the PROFIBUS DP Profile for HART?Specification.
Client application developers can use this document to understand the operation of an HMD and craft his application to properly access HART Field Devices it is connected to.
An HMD must perform both as a PROFIBUS DP slave and a HART Master. Many developers reading this document may not (initially) be experts in both of these technologies. As a result, this document does not assume or require the reader to have in depth HART or PROFIBUS DP knowledge. The reader should be familiar with basic digital communication principles.
This document provides an overview of communication to HART Field Devices connected to PROFIBUS DP (slave) I/O systems. Furthermore, this document clarifies the capabilities found in the PROFIBUS DP Profile for HART?Specification and provides guidance for the development of compatible products and applications.
The PROFIBUS DP Profile for HART?Specification includes all data structures, services and procedures that must be supported by compliant products. In addition, the specification selects a number of optional features. This document clarifies the capabilities by providing a variety of implementation examples. In addition, communication transactions are included to illustrate operation of compliant devices as part of a complete system.
This document is an overview and does not supercede the PROFIBUS and HART specifications nor those found in the PROFIBUS DP Profile for HART?Specification. Product and application designers must understand and comply with all requirements found in either protocol.
